Costa del Sol, or Spanish Costa Del Sol , is a coastal strip approximately 300 kilometers long in AndalusiaThe area extends from Gibraltarrocks till Sierra Nevada-mountains.

Costa del Sol is immensely popular among Europeans in general, and Nordics in particular. This can be explained by the area's relaxed mentality, its superb climate (over 300 days of sunshine per year), and beautiful surroundings with the famous beaches as the crown jewels. The entertainment scene, and opportunities for activities and all kinds of historical and cultural excursions are other strong contributors to Costa del Sol's popularity.

When the Swede chooses to buy a house in Spain The Spanish Costa Del Sol is often the final choice. We believe that the main reason for Costa del Sol's strong appeal is that the people in the area, just like Andalusia in general, have managed to maintain their old cultural traditions (the area has been influenced by, among others, Moors, Romans, and Germans) despite the spread of a hypermodern tourist industry, and luxury properties for wealthy foreigners.

It is said that Costa del Sol is Spain's locomotive, first into the crises, and first out of them. In 2014, both housing sales and tourism in general exploded, and for the first time ever, they could set their sights on the magical threshold of 10 million tourist overnight stays. Since then, they have continued to break record after record and it is difficult to say where and when the ceiling will be reached. In contrast to the Costa Blanca, Costa Del Sol is increasingly focusing on exclusive tourism, and more wealthy buyers of homes. Weather on Costa del Sol

The weather, just like Sweden, has four distinct seasons, spring – March, April and May. Summer – June, July and August. Autumn – September, October and November. Winter – December, January and February. However, the temperatures differ significantly from Sweden. On Costa Del Sol the mercury rarely drops below 20 degrees Celsius. With an average of 325 sunny days, it is easy to understand where the name Costa del Sol comes from. No other region on the European mainland has more sun than this area.

Spring weather: during the day the temperature is between 18-23 degrees (with mostly clear skies), but the evenings can be quite chilly, 9-13 degrees. It is quite cold in the sea during the spring season, around 15-17 degrees.

Summer weather: the average temperature for the whole day is a pleasant 22 degrees in June, rising to 25 in July and reaching its peak of 26 degrees in August. During the day the temperature is 27-29 degrees. Summer nights are rarely unbearable, however, because the sea provides coolness. There is generally very little rain during this season.

Autumn weather: the pleasant weather persists and the average temperature for the whole day is 23 in September, 19 in October and 15 in November. The average temperature, for comparison, in Stockholm during the month of July is approx. 18 degrees. The difference in temperature during the day and at night is significant on Costa del Sol during the autumn. Up to 26 degrees warm during the day and down to 10 degrees at night (however more common that it is around 15). The sea is still warm during the autumn and does not drop to 18 degrees until November. November is also the wettest month of the year with 115 mm of precipitation during an average of 11 rainy days.

Winter weather: Although this is the coolest period of the year, it is still milder than elsewhere in Europe, and this is due to the Sierra Bermeja mountains which protect from cold winds. The average daytime temperature in December is 13 degrees, 12 in January, and 13 in February (however, it is strikingly often up to 20 degrees during the day even during winter). On average, you still enjoy 5-6 hours of sunshine per day during the winter period, so you get the important vitamin D (it is recommended that those living north of Malaga or Athens take vitamin D supplements during the winter months). all year round from the sun. The wettest winter month is December with 98 mm of precipitation over 13 days. The sea temperature is 15-16 degrees during winter.

Guide Costa del Sol – lots to do and see

It is a common misconception among many that Costa Del Sol has become one big tourist attraction, and that everything revolves around tourism. This is completely wrong. The genuine Andalusian spirit still remains, and in some places along the coast, and plenty of places a little further inland, you will find small towns and villages where traditional Spanish reigns among the hypnotic tranquility of the olive trees.

The main seat on the Spanish Costa Del Sol is the city of millions Malaga, Picasso's famous birthplace. Here you can see the tribute to the great hero of the region in the form of a brilliant museum. You can watch the popular football team Malaga CF play against greats such as FC Barcelona or Real Madrid, party in one of Malaga's many bars, go shopping, visit the impressive castles of Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro, or just stroll around the city's historic alleys. In recent years, the city has undergone a new transformation and now boasts, among other things, wide avenues and a new, beautiful harbor with shops and restaurants. The city was also named the Capital of Smart Tourism in Europe 2020 by the European Commission (along with Gothenburg). This is partly due to the province's strong focus on sustainable tourism.

Nerja - everyone's favorite
Nerja – everyone’s favorite

Nerja, which is located east of Malaga, is the small town with a big atmosphere. Here you will find both tranquility and entertainment, “Europe's best climate” (so-called unique microclimate), stunning views, picturesque houses, and very clean beaches as well as a new focus on Sustainability and Quality Tourism, from 2019 onwards. This means, among other things, that the fine nature parks in the area are further renovated and that beaches etc. are kept as clean as possible. When the influential Swedish travel magazine Vagabond ranked the towns on Costa del Sol Nerja was the only resort to receive the highest rating, five stars out of five possible! In addition, the town was recently named “Spain’s most beautiful coastal town” in a major international poll. Read more about Nerja in this article! The town is becoming an increasingly exclusive destination, but accommodation prices are still relatively cheap, making Nerja a hotspot for investors looking to buy up properties to rent.

Nearby Torrox Costa and La Herradura and Almunecar are also nice and beautiful cities, and even a little cheaper (but not as lively), cities on the eastern side (the latter towns belong to Costa Tropical).

The typical Spanish village, with whitewashed houses (Benalmadena Pueblo) and fantastic views, Benalmadena, just west of Malagais another gem. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars here, but the city has still managed to retain its Spanish and calm soul, even though leisure tourism is growing stronger (such as with new luxury resort with Michelin restaurants and a renovated Tivoli World, etc.). The view from Calamurro is spectacular, and the port is enormous.

Ronda is the region's most historic city, and is a popular day trip destination for those tired of the beachside hustle and bustle. Spectacular gorges and mountains surround the old town, which Hemingway considered “the perfect place for a honeymoon.” It is full of museums, great restaurants, and historic buildings. In Ronda, you can also visit one of Spain’s oldest bullrings.

Other popular excursion destinations near Costa del Sol include Cordoba, Gibraltar, Tangier in Maro, Seville and Granada.

Fuengirola has long been (although things have started to change significantly in recent years) the favorite place for Swedes on Costa del Sol to buy a house or apartment. Here you will find, among other things Swedish School, and Church of SwedenThe city is best known for its nightlife, and the long beautiful promenade.

Even further west found in Estepona with its famous harbor and cobblestone streets.

From the haunts of international celebrities Marbella, west of Malaga, to the Swedes' new favorite Nerja in the east and cozy village Competa A little inland from the coast Costa del Sol still has something to offer everyone, whether they are looking to buy a home and settle down, or just escape to the sun for a short holiday.

“East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,” said Rudyard Kipling a long time ago, in a completely different context. But the fact is that this is also true for Costa del Sol. The eastern parts are for many more inviting with their bold nature, where the cliffs go all the way down to the sea, and more preserved Spanish culture. The atmosphere is a little more intimate, the prices are slightly cheaper and the large, bulky tourist complexes are conspicuous by their absenceIn the West we feel like guests, in the East we feel at home.” as someone put it. However, if you are looking for a more international vibe (or are a big golf fan), Marbellaarea is the place we recommend for you. There is simply something for all tastes and preferences on the Spanish Costa del Sol.
