It's strange that here in Sweden we don't have a better understanding of Sierra Nevada, the mighty Spanish mountain, and its excellent skiing opportunities. It's hard for us to understand when we're wandering around in, for example, exotic and warm Nerja that in every man's house there is a pair of slalom skis!
Perhaps it's something about the location that makes us skeptical. The Spanish mountain is so close to Africa that you can even see Marowith the naked eye from Sierra Nevada. Can't you swim in the Mediterranean in Europe's best climate during the day and just over an hour later go slalom or snowboard?
Yes, indeed. You can. In fact, the slopes of Sierra Nevada, which is Europe's southernmost ski resort, are so good that the resort hosted the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 1996. The reason there is so much snow in the mountains despite being so close to Africa is because they are so incredibly high. The highest point in the ski area, Pico del Veleta, is over 3,000 meters above sea level!

The entire area for skiing in Sierra Nevada, its size and standard, can be compared to Åre. The lift system is also very good! A lift pass, hotel, food and other ancillary costs are lower than in Sweden.
The season lasts from November/December until May. From February onwards it is so warm that you can ski in shorts or a bikini if you wish. The chance of a serious sunburn on the snow-covered slopes is therefore imminent…
For a few years now, a very popular event has been organized at the end of April when everyone is allowed to ski in a bikini or swimming trunks.
