Guide Almuñécar and La Herradura on the Costa Tropical

Almuñécar is a holiday resort on the Costa Tropical in the Andalucia region . The city, which belongs to the province of Granada , has around 27,000 permanent residents. In summer, however, the population at least quintuples and Almuñécar is a popular destination both among the Spaniards themselves and among tourists from the rest of Europe.

The nearby village of La Herradura is set in a very beautiful landscape and has an even more relaxed atmosphere, even in the summer months. La Herradura also attracts some younger visitors, as the area is very popular with windsurfers and divers (in particular, divers consider the bay at Almuñécar and Marina del Este to be excellent places for diving. The visibility depth is down to 50 meters). Here you can also find the beautiful marina Marina del Este, as well as the natural park Cerro Gordo. Punta de la Mona is one of the more exclusive residential areas on the Costa Tropical.

Almuñécar is a relatively cheap town, where most things center around beach life. The old part of town is a charming labyrinth that lies below the 16th-century castle. However, there are many who do not like the older, rather ugly, tall housing complexes that surround the otherwise picturesque city center. Then the neighboring village of La Herradura is more appreciated among Scandinavians as it is a more untouched, scenic bay that does not have beauty spots in the form of architectural monsters.

Entertainment Almuñécar

During the winter months, Almuñécar is a relatively quiet town with a relaxed entertainment scene. During the summer months, when the number of inhabitants increases sharply, it becomes more lively, however. The pace begins to pick up in connection with the San Juan festival, which starts in June and then escalates during the summer months.

Almuñécar's size means that most of the entertainment options are centered and you'll find most of the restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the city center by the beaches. Plaza Kelibia is the main destination for evening and nighttime entertainment in Almuñécar.

The range of restaurants in this resort is relatively large and many restaurants focus on the local cuisine, which is based on large quantities of fresh fish of various kinds and tropical fruits. Precisely the latter is something Almuñécar is widely known for. In Almuñécar, guavas, papayas, figs and a variety of other fruits are grown, and the locals are no strangers to using fruit in food and desserts.

Sights Almuñécar

  • With a history that goes back nearly 3,000 years, there are of course a lot of archaeological sights in the city. A highlight of a sightseeing tour is the Phoenician ruins at Majuelo Park.
  • Musei Arquelógico is located in an approximately 2000-year-old stone cellar called Cueva de Siete Palacios. Here you can see remains from the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Muslims and a 3500-year-old Egyptian amphora (two-eared vessel).
  • Another attraction is the very well-preserved Roman aqueduct at Torrecuevas.
  • The Castle of San Miguel is also worth a visit.
  • The ornithological park (parque Ornotológico Sexi) is home to, among other things, parrots.
  • The top of the Alpujarra in the mountains, about 10 km by car from Almuñécar, is a paradise for those interested in nature. The surroundings around the top are known to be strikingly beautiful and here there is a special calm.

History of Almuñécar

It was the Phoenicians who founded Almuñécar close to 800 years BC. The reason for the founding was that the site's location was seen as ideal for fishing and trade.

Like most other places on the coast, the city was then taken by the Romans and Sexi, as the place was called, was actually under Roman rule for over 700 years. After the fall of Rome, the Visigoths made a short interlude, but it was then the Moors who took over the reins. The year of the Moors entry into Almuñécar was 755 AD. Since 1489, Almuñécar has been part of the central government.

Communications and aviation

The nearest airport is Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport, located 94 km from Almuñécar city centre. It is easy to find flight tickets to Málaga from Sweden and for the transfer to Almuñécar, a bus or taxi is recommended. Tips on cheap flights to, for example, Malaga airport.

Communications by car between Almuñécar and other towns on the coastal strip have been very good since 2012 as the A-7 motorway runs through the town. The N340 runs between the northern parts of both Almuñécar and La Herradura. Between Nerja and Almuñécar it takes only 20 minutes via the E-15 and N-340. However, the city cannot boast of any connections by train, but we recommend that you rent a car. Tips on where to rent a car, as well as some Spanish traffic rules you should know.

Accommodation in Almuñécar

We currently have no apartments or houses for rent in the area. However, we recommend the world's largest accommodation booking engine, Hotels.com , which is the cheapest in hotels.

The weather in Almuñécar

Almuñécar, together with surrounding towns, has a microclimate with more rainfall and slightly milder summer temperatures. The reason is that the Sierra Nevada runs almost all the way down to the sea. When the sun is baking other places on the Costa de Sol and the temperatures reach up to 40 degrees, it can be a pleasant 27-30 degrees in Almuñécar.

Apartments and houses for sale in Almuñécar and La Herradura

As neighboring Nerja is only growing in popularity, and consequently is the city in Spain where prices are increasing the fastest at the moment, we will need to find alternatives once the city becomes too expensive. Almuñécar and La Herradura are then natural alternatives, even if they are currently nowhere near as desirable as Nerja.

Most popular among Scandinavians are the old quarters by the castle.

Above all, La Herradura is interesting to us because of its beautiful location. Our corporate attorney is scanning the area for good, vacant lots. At the same time, we can offer cheap houses and apartments for sale in and around Almuñécar and La Heradura in the form of bank repossessions. In contrast to Nerja, where a maximum of one bank object appears a year, there are a few more to choose from in this part of Andalusia.
