The typically Spanish – traditions and customs in Spain

Spain has beautiful people and traditions

Spain has long been a Swede's favorite country to visit and/or settle in. Admittedly, this has a lot to do with the climate, the sea and the cheap prices. But above all, it is the friendly people and their, somewhat pleasantly odd, traditions that have charmed several generations of Swedes. We therefore thought we would compile a list of some traditions and customs that are typically Spanish.

“Typically Spanish”

Flamenco is a very special style of music that sometimes also has elements of dance. This dance also involves dressing in typical Flamenco costumes.

Siesta is an institution in Spanish culture that is unfortunately crumbling under the influence of stressful northern Europeans. This is a great shame because there is more and more scientific evidence that a siesta, that is, a nap or just a slow dinner with good friends, during the day does wonders for your health.

Bullfighting has existed in Spain for over a thousand years and its birthplace is Malaga. It is true that some cities in Spain have begun to ban bullfighting, but like the siesta it will probably always remain in some form as it is part of the Spanish folk soul.

Magnificent festivals in all its forms occurs several times a year in almost every Spanish village and town. No other people love to party and dance together for several days of delightful hysteria like the Spaniards. Which brings us to our next point:

Spanish nightlife is hectic, and the party doesn't start until midnight and ends sometime in the wee hours. The stronghold of all party-goers is capital city Madrid. They call New York the city that never sleeps, which is completely wrong. It is Madrid that never sleeps. Spaniards are generally night people. When they started to adapt working hours to the rest of Europe, i.e. that people start working in the morning, the Spaniards solved this cultural clash by simply sleeping less. The Spaniards are Europe's night owls and sleep the least in the world according to statistics.

Football is religion in Spain, and most interest revolves around the two great antagonists Barcelona and Madrid regardless of where in Spain you live (the Basque Country is an exception, however).

Tapas is a small portion of food, which can be basically any dish. The main thing is that you go from tapas bar to tapas bar and order the specialty of each establishment.
