About the village Maro outside Nerja

The very beautiful and charming village Maro, with a population of 800, is located on the coast, three kilometers east of Nerja and 55 kilometers east of Malaga, in the Axarquia region of Andalusia. Its whitewashed buildings are a fine example of the famous Andalusian architecture of the towns and villages on this part of the Mediterranean coast. The village's roots date back to the early Christian era, and its first structure is the Roman fortification historically known as Detunda, meaning "defense".

The village streets in this area couldn't be more authentically Spanish, with flower pots on the balconies and the ever-present Mediterranean sea wherever you turn. One of the most beautiful streets is Calle Virgen de las Maravillas, which leads to Balcon de Maro. Here, among other things, is the 18th-century church of Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas.

Not far from the town center , next to N-340 road towards Nerja, is another famous monument, the Aguila Aqueduct. This was built between 1879 and 1880, to ensure that water would reach the San Joaquín sugar factory. The world-famous Nerja Caves ( Nerja Cave) is located near the village.
