Mother's Day is one of the most popular holidays in Spain and "el día de madre" is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May (in Sweden we celebrate on the last Sunday in May). It is no coincidence that the month of May in Spain is also dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Gifts that Spaniards usually give their mothers include, just like in Sweden, everything from gift cards to chocolates and flowers. However, the type of gifts given varies in the different regions.
Everyone has very distinctive traditions when it comes to most things. Mother's Day is no exception. A very Spanish tradition is that children honor their mother with a poem and a hand-painted card on her big day. Most families in Spain gather their families for a big dinner at home or at a restaurant.
If we may quite shamelessly suggest one of our products as a gift for Mother's Day, we suggest that you book a week in lovely Capistrano Village (This is clearly one of the nicest places around the Mediterranean.) in Nerja, or elsewhere in the city.
Tips on gifts for Mother's Day, as well as a video on how people celebrate around the world.
The exact history of Mother's Day is not entirely clear. The modern form of celebration began in the United States in the early 20th century, but it is believed to have originated with a mother worship in the Mediterranean region during the ancient period. At that time, Rhea, the mother of the gods, was honored in various rites in Greece.
May is also, as previously mentioned, the month of the Virgin Mary, and the time of year when summer is just around the corner, the flowers are starting to bloom and the warming sun is returning in earnest. Celebrating your mother is celebrating life, celebrating the harvest. If you are going to visit Costa Del Sol in our opinion, May is the most beautiful month of them all, because it is the greenest, while the sun has not yet had time to become oppressively hot!
