Lloret de Mar – accommodation, attractions, bank repossession etc.

Lloret de Mar is a classic holiday resort on the Costa Brava in northern Catalonia, about 70 km from Barcelona. The Spanish name for the coast roughly translates to "wild" in Swedish, and this part of Spain's Mediterranean coast is a hilly history with a fantastic nature where winding mountain areas are mixed with beautiful sandy beaches. Right next to the city center are two long stretches of beach and inland the mountain slopes spread out.

Lloret de Mar was originally a fishing village, but through Franco's efforts, the town was developed into a holiday resort in the 1950s. It actually only took a couple of years for Lloret de Mar to be put on the map. Today, Lloret de Mar has around 40,000 inhabitants, but during the high season the number of inhabitants in the town quadruples (at least).

Entertainment Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar has had over 50 years to build up a high-quality entertainment offer for its visitors and today there is something for all tastes in the resort. In town center for most visitors are the beaches Sa Caleta and Lloret, but it should be said that Lloret de Mar is also a resort of a slightly more elegant nature. Here you can find, for example, theaters, exclusive restaurants and even a casinoIf you're looking for a more modern (and hectic!) nightlife, Lloret de Mar won't disappoint. At the same time, you can easily go out just for a coffee or a cava in a cozy café.

The city also organizes, it wouldn't be a Spanish city otherwise, several festivals and carnivals throughout the year. The largest, annually recurring, festival is when they celebrate Santa Cristina July 24.

La-dona-Marinera (the fisherman's wife)Sculptor Maragall's artwork The Marine Lady (the fisherman's wife) is a symbol of the city. She faces the sea and the question is whether she is waving goodbye to her husband or welcoming him home. It is up to the visitor to decide!

Other attractions in Lloret de Mar include the D'en Plaja Castle, located right at the end of Sa Caleta beach, the Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer promenade, with the town hall in the background, and the Gothic church Church of Sant Romà.

Attractions Lloret de Mar

Don't miss visiting Santa Clotilde-the gardens, beautifully situated on top of a cliff. These gardens are an excellent monument to the intellectual and aesthetic wave that swept over the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The inspiration for the gardens was drawn mainly from the Italian Renaissance.

History of Lloret de Mar

The modern history of Lloret de Mar may only go back about 50-60 years, but the town has roots that go back much further. Like so many other towns on today's Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar is believed to have been founded by the Romans. It is also probably the Romans who gave the town its name. Lloret is thought to come from the Latin "lauretum" (bay leaf).

For many centuries, Lloret de Mar was a rather sleepy fishing village, but that all changed in the 18th century when the port took on a greater role. It was largely the wealthy Spanish returnees from South America who were responsible for the town's prosperity. The port no longer exists, but in some places in the town there are so-called garriga houses that remind us of that prosperous era.
