Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the island of the same name and the regional capital of the Balearic Islands. The city, which today has nearly 300,000 inhabitants, is a classic holiday resort that we Swedes, among others, have visited for almost 60 years. The first charter flight from Sweden to Mallorca actually landed in 1955. Read more about cheap flights to Mallorca, among other places.
Entertainment Palma
Palma has a well-known – some say infamous – nightlife scene. It is clear that the nightlife in Palma is generally more hectic than in many other places, but the city still has something for everyone.
Palma is home to one of the world's most famous nightclubs, namely Tito'sThis nightclub has been around since the 1950s and the number of famous people who have visited it is too numerous to count. Palma also has a world-famous bar, Abaco, which serves the biggest drinks you've ever seen and will ever see.
No Spanish city is complete without festivals, and Palma has both traditional and modern festivals. Festival Isladencanta is a highlight of the calendar. This festival, which takes place in July each year, is a must for music lovers. The Festa de l'Estendard is Palma's famous New Year's Eve festival and is not to be missed if you are visiting the city over the New Year.
The city also has really good shopping. Above all, a walk along the pedestrian street Calle Olmos. A hot shopping tip when it comes to Spain in general and Palma in particular is to buy shoes (don't miss Carmina Shoemaker), which are both stylish and affordable here. Leather products and pearls are also of high quality and are cheap in Palma de Mallorca. Note, it is not really customary to haggle in shops in Mallorca, but in the markets it works perfectly (although not on fruit and vegetables of course). Also don't miss visiting the excellent market hall Mercado de l'Olivar.
Attractions in Palma
Most of the historical sights in Palma are located in the historic center. Some of the landmarks recommended are: cathedral (La Seu) which is built in a distinct Gothic style, the Roman baths (Banys Àrabs) and the imposing bullfighting arena.
Palma is also home to a couple of top-notch museums. At the Museo de Arte Español Contemporáneo you can see art from the likes of Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, and at the Castell de Bellver castle, which is an attraction in itself, there are unique collections of statues and ancient artifacts.
History of Palma
Palma was already inhabited during the Bronze Age, but it was the Romans who first built a city. Then, in turn, the Vandals, Byzantines and Moors arrived. It was the Moors who began to build a more modern city and under Moorish rule the city was relatively important around the Mediterranean.
James of Aragon captured Palma in 1229 and a few years later the city became the capital of the Kingdom of Mallorca. Palma now grew to become an important trading post and until the 1950s it was trade that the city was known for. Today, tourism is the number one industry in both Palma and Mallorca as a whole.

Public Transport Connections

Accommodation Mallorca
In recent years, there has been a strong focus on improving the city's reputation by investing in exclusive all-inclusive- resort s. This strategy has been very successful (which has also led to increased house prices on the island. Accommodation here is generally very expensive). However, it feels like the all-inclusive trend is dying out a bit. People think that the gastronomic journey is half the fun. Especially in a city like Mallorca which offers several top-class international restaurants.
We recommend that you book cheap hotel rooms via hotels.com, preferably in the historic part of the city! Here you will find all their offers for Mallorca right now.Cheaper accommodation than that is hard to come by here. Tips for more hotels.
Unfortunately, we do not yet offer long stay (a bit too high prices) housing here, but will return to the topic if this changes.
Weather Palma
Palma has a typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters. Compared to most of the resorts in the southern and eastern part of the Spanish mainland, the temperatures in Palma are considerably more pleasant. In summer, the average temperature is around 25 degrees and it rarely gets more than 35 degrees.
Bank Repossession on Palma
There is still a relatively good supply of bank repossession left in the city, not so many houses, but quite a few apartments at good prices. However, don't expect too much (many have an unrealistic perception of the price picture for housing) housing for under a million - this is after all a popular city on a very sought-after island. Expect somewhat simpler apartments (some renovation needed) for prices around 50,000 Euros and up.
Prices never fell as much during the crisis in Mallorca as on the mainland. That is why we only offer bank repossession in Palma and the rest of Mallorca. If you want a home in the upper segment (2 million and up), we refer you to another broker.
You also have to be pretty quick with your turns if you're going to make a clip of a home on Palma. The best properties disappear quickly when they come out. Write to info@spanskafastigheter.se for more information.
