History of Mallorca

Mallorca's history begins in the Bronze Age, but development only took off under Roman rule. Under Moorish rule between around 800 and 1220, Mallorca became an important trading post for traffic between mainland Spain and other parts of the Mediterranean. This tradition has continued ever since. However, in recent years, trade has had to take a back seat to increased tourism. From the 1950s onwards, Mallorca has been one of the leading charter destinations in Europe. In recent years, it has managed to redefine itself and stimulated the construction of luxury hotels, resort spas, Michelin restaurants, etc., and is slowly but surely transforming into an increasingly exclusive destination for those with a lot of money.
