Plaza de España, also known as Plaza Paseo Nuevo, is a large square located in town center of Nerja. It is built on top of the municipal underground car park, just behind the town hall. The square was officially inaugurated as Plaza de España on 27 March 2011. The square's most distinctive feature is the Spanish flag flying high above it. The plaza is increasingly used for various celebrations, markets and special events such as Dia del Pedal, Dia del Residente and Tourism Day. The flagpole's base is made up of blocks bearing the names of the autonomous regions of Spain. Another notable feature of the square is Nerja History Museum, located in the upper left corner. The museum traces the history of Nerja from Paleolithic times to the boom of the 1960s.
