Plaza de España, also known as Plaza Paseo Nuevo, is a large square located in the center of Nerja. It is built on top of the municipal underground car park, just behind the town hall. The square was officially inaugurated as Plaza de España on March 27, 2011. The most distinctive feature of the square is the Spanish flag that flies high above it. The plaza is increasingly used for various celebrations, markets and special events such as Dia del Pedal, Dia del Residente and Tourist Day. The plinth of the flagpole consists of blocks bearing the names of Spain's autonomous regions. Another notable feature of the square is the Nerja History Museum, located in the upper left corner. The museum traces Nerja's history from Paleolithic times to the boom of the 60s.
