Mother's Day is one of the most popular holidays in Spain and "el día de madre" is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May (in Sweden, as you know, we celebrate it on the last Sunday in May). It is no coincidence that the month of May in Spain is also dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Gifts the Spanish usually give their mother include, just like in Sweden, everything from gift cards to chocolates and flowers. However, the type of gifts that are given varies in the different regions.

The exact history behind Mother's Day is not entirely clear. The modern form of observance started in the United States in the early 20th century, but it is believed to have started with a mother worship in the Mediterranean area during the ancient period. At that time, Rhea was the mother of the gods, who was celebrated with various rites in Greece.
The month of May is also, as previously mentioned, the month of the Virgin Mary, and the time of year when summer is at the door, the flowers begin to bud and the warming sun returns in earnest. To celebrate one's mother is to celebrate life, to celebrate the harvests. If you are going to visit the Solkusten, the month of May is in our opinion the most beautiful month of them all, because it is at its greenest, while the sun has not yet had time to become oppressively hot!
