Guide to Mijas - attractions - weather - housing market

The municipal district of Mijas is divided into three different areas. The village of Mijas Pueblo, which is a traditional mountain village a few kilometers inland. Mijas Costa, a 12 kilometer long stretch of coast where the more modern and international towns of Cala de Mijas and Las Lagunas are located.

In this guide we go through different areas of Mijas, beaches, attractions, weather, etc. We also write a few lines about the state of the housing market. Write to info@spanskafastigheter.se if you have any questions about buying a home in the area.

Guide Mijas

Mijas Pueblo

428 meters above sea level, the little jewel of Mijas Pueblo is nestled in a mountain on Spain's sunny coast. In this small Andalusian white village you walk through narrow and narrow cobbled streets and you can understand why it has been so popular to settle here over the years. The village is home to many artists and writers who settled here for the pleasant climate and the tranquility that prevails here.

The village has 7,500 inhabitants, mostly Spaniards, English and other nationalities. As there are many nationalities, there is a tourist center here that you can turn to if you cannot speak Spanish.

Despite the large influx of tourists, Mijas Pueblo has managed to maintain its traditional Andalusian charm and lifestyle. Here, the locals have a great passion for partying and a nice and relaxed 'mañana' - attitude to life.

There is a range of things to see and do in Mijas Pueblo
The most popular tourist attraction is the oval bullring. It was built in 1900 and is one of Spain's smallest bullrings. Today it is used for horse shows and bullfighting. Ticket prices vary depending on whether you sit on the shaded or sunny side, with the shaded side being the most expensive.

Other popular attractions are Flamenco, Casa Museo, Virgen de la Peña (Patron Saint of Mijas), Shrine of Calvario (Chapel), La Muralla (Church), Parque Acuatico Mijas (Waterland) to name a few.

The easiest way to get here is to hop on the bus from Fuengirola.
The bus journey takes about 20 minutes and costs €1.50.

Mijas Costa and La Cala de Mijas

The 12 kilometer stretch of Mijas Costa coastline is the part of Mijas that is more modern than traditional. There are many holiday homes here, ranging from small apartments to huge villas. There are two large residential areas (where many Swedes also own homes), Sitio de Calahonda and Riviera del Sol . Bars and restaurants are crowded here with golf courses, sports facilities and supermarkets.

Mijas Costa has many different sandy beaches to choose from and the beach life here offers a range of water sports activities such as, windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing etc.

The longest beach, Calahonda, is 4,500 meters long and 25 meters wide.
It is a very popular beach located right next to the town of Calahonda. The range of restaurants and bars is many. If you are looking for a beach with less hustle and bustle, the pebble beach El Cabo Rocoso is a good option.
Here there is only a small kiosk and a rental point for water sports equipment. Some other beaches to mention are Playa la Cala de Mijas, Playa del Chaparal (nudist beach), El Faro and El Charcon.

In the middle of the Mijas Costa is La Cala de Mijas .
In the past it was an old fishing village and despite its popularity, the Andalusian charm still lives on. La Cala de Mijas is a popular holiday destination for Brits, which has seen its population increase sharply in recent years. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, schools, post offices, libraries, shops and cultural centers here. Every Wednesday and Saturday you can visit the city's popular street market, El Barratillo, where you can find everything from clothes and ceramics to flowers and vegetables.

On July 25 every year, a big festival is organized in La Cala. The whole village turns into a big party where you can drink good traditional wine, eat fabulous tapas, dance and listen to local music.

During the hot summer months of July and August, Saturday nights in La Cala turn into something magical. The promenade becomes a stage for classical music and flamenco where passers-by become spectators. In the background you can see the old watchtower of Torre Vieja and the moon which is beautifully reflected in the sea. The celebration of Noches de Luna y Playa has begun.

Las Lagunas

About half of Mija's population lives in Las Lagunas. The city is lively, modern and commercial. The city center was built in less than 30 years and here there is a large selection of shops, restaurants, bars and a very popular theatre. The town is a hub for easy access to Mijas Pueblo, Mijas Costa, Fuengirola and Malaga Airport.

Mija's weather

Mijas, like the other resorts on the western Costa del Sol, has approximately 325 sunny days a year.

  • Spring is relatively warm and the average temperature in March is 14 degrees, and the average temperature in May is higher than the Swedish high summer, when it is 19 degrees. There are some scattered showers of rain during the spring, but the rain is rarely persistent or heavy.
  • The summer is hot, but it rarely becomes unbearable because of the sea. 22 degrees in June, 26 in July and 30 or warmer in August (many Spaniards then take holidays in cooler latitudes). On average, there are more than 11 hours of sunshine per day during the summer. It will also, as usual, be slightly cooler at night.
  • Autumn is the golfers' favorite season in the area as the summer temperatures last a long time. 23 degrees in September, 19 in October and 15 in November (during the day, however, the temperature is comparable to Sweden in June/July, but the evenings can be quite chilly).
  • Winter is nowhere near as cold as in northern latitudes. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 12 degrees, and December and February are around 13 degrees.

Housing market Mijas - houses and apartments for sale

Right now, 2 exciting new projects with houses and apartments are being built in the Mijas area:

Eco-friendly townhouses and houses in La Cala de Mijas.

Newly produced houses and apartments in La Cala.

There are also still a lot of empty homes in the area since the crisis, houses and apartments in different price ranges.
As there is a lot of empty space in the wake of the crisis, prices are generally lower than on the rest of the Sunshine Coast. However, these bank repossessors are located by highways etc. and are generally not recommended (there are exceptions though, but most of the best ones have already been sold off). Regardless of the type of home you are interested in in Mijas, write to info@spanskafastigheter.se and we will get back to you with more information.
