Sierra Nevada in Spain is a forgotten gem among ski resorts

Beautiful slopes

It's strange that here in Sweden we don't have a better grasp of the Sierra Nevada, the mighty Spanish mountain, and its excellent skiing opportunities. It is difficult for us to understand when we wander around in, for example, exotic and warm Nerja that every man's house has a pair of slalom skis!

Perhaps there is something about the situation that makes us skeptical. The Spanish mountain is so close to Africa that you can even see Morocco with the naked eye from the Sierra Nevada. Can't you swim in the Mediterranean Sea in Europe's best climate during the day and just a little over an hour later go slaloming or snowboarding?

Yes, actually. You can. In fact, the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, which is Europe's southernmost ski resort, are so good that the ski resort hosted the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 1996. The reason why there is so much snow in the mountains, despite the proximity to Africa, is because it is so incredibly high . The ski area's highest point, Pico del Veleta, is over 3,000 meters above sea level!

The entire area of skiing in the Sierra Nevada, its size and standard, can be compared to Åre. The lift system is also very good! A lift pass, hotel, food and other incidental costs are lower than in Sweden.

The season lasts from November/December right through to May. From February it is so hot that you can ride in shorts or a bikini if you so wish. The chance of a serious sunburn on the snow-covered slopes is therefore imminent...

For a few years now, a very popular event has been organized at the end of April when everyone is allowed to ski in bikinis or swimming trunks.
