Lloret de Mar is a classic holiday resort on the Costa Brava in northern Catalonia, about 70 km from Barcelona. The Spanish name for the coast can be roughly translated as the Swedish "wild" and this part of Spain's coast towards the Mediterranean is a hilly story with a fantastic nature where winding mountain areas are mixed with beautiful sandy beaches. Right next to the city center are two long strips of beach and inland the mountain slopes spread out.
Lloret de Mar was originally a fishing community, but thanks to Franco's care, the town was developed in the 1950s to become a holiday resort. In fact, it only took a couple of years for Lloret de Mar to be put on the map. Today Lloret de Mar has around 40,000 inhabitants, but during the high season the number of inhabitants quadruples (at least).
Entertainment Lloret de Mar
Lloret de Mar has had over 50 years to build up a range of entertainment for its visitors and today there is something for all tastes in the resort. In the center for most visitors are the beaches of Sa Caleta and Lloret, but it must be said that Lloret de Mar is also a resort of a slightly more elegant cut. Here, for example, there are theaters, exclusive restaurants and even a casino . If it's a more modern (and hectic!) nightlife that attracts you, Lloret de Mar will not disappoint. At the same time, you can very well go out just for a coffee or a cava in a cozy café.
The city also organizes, it wouldn't be a Spanish city otherwise, a number of festivals and carnivals during the year. The biggest annual festival is when Santa Cristina on July 24th.
Attractions Lloret de Mar
The sculptor Maragall's artwork La Dona Marinera (the fisherman's wife) is a symbol of the city. She is facing the sea and the question is whether she is waving goodbye to her husband or whether she is welcoming him home. It is up to the visitor to decide!
Other attractions in Lloret de Mar are the castle D'en Plaja, located right at the end of Sa Caleta beach, the promenade Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer, with the town hall in the fund, and the Gothic church Church of Sant Romà .
Also, don't miss visiting the Santa Clotilde gardens, which are beautifully placed on top of a cliff. These gardens are an excellent monument to the intellectual and aesthetic wave that washed over the city during the early 20th century. The inspiration for the gardens was mainly taken from the Italian Renaissance.

History of Lloret de Mar
Lloret de Mar's modern history may only go back about 50-60 years, but the resort has origins that go back much further. Like so many other resorts on today's Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar is also considered to have been founded by the Romans. It is also probably the Romans who gave the place its name. Lloret is considered to come from the Latin "lauretum" (bay leaf).
For many hundreds of years Lloret de Mar was a rather sleepy fishing village, but that all changed in the 18th century when the port took on a bigger role. To a large extent, it was wealthy Spanish returnees from South America who were responsible for the city's prosperity. The harbor is no longer there, but in some places in the town there are so-called garriga houses that are reminiscent of the prosperous era.
