Girona is one of the largest cities in Catalonia with around 100,000 inhabitants. The city is very old and has a kind of ancient calm, especially in the older parts of the city centre, which are embraced by the city walls that date back to the Roman Empire.
Nightlife Girona
Every city has its own personality and Girona's personality is one of calm and elegance. There is of course a wide range of evening entertainment - Girona is, after all, the promised homeland of the fiesta - but the nightlife is not particularly hectic.
The entertainment options are relatively spread out in the city, but most of the focus is on the old town and the main street, Rambla de la Llibertat. It is in these areas that most of the bars, restaurants and nightclubs are located.
The food in Girona – here is the “world’s best restaurant”

The range of restaurants of different types is very large in the city. There is always something good to eat here for all different types of taste buds and budgets. Although Girona is generally somewhat more expensive than most other Spanish cities, the food in restaurants is cheap by Swedish standards.
In 2015, the British food magazine Restaurant (considered the most prestigious publication on the subject) named El Celler de Can Roca to “the world’s best restaurant”. This was not the first time the restaurant had received this epithet either. The restaurant is considered to be unusually creative in its culinary art. In addition, the wine cellar has over 60,000 bottles in its assortment! You can find El Celler de Can Roca on C/ de San Sunyer.

- Girona was founded by the Iberians sometime before the start of our modern era. The Romans then took over and then, in turn, the Visigoths and Moors were the masters of the city.
- In 785, Charlemagne arrived with his army in Girona, then known as Gerunda, and defeated the Moors. He proclaimed Gerunda a county of Catalonia, and with this status the city could begin to grow into a central town in the area.
- Between the early 13th century and 1492, Girona was home to a large Jewish community and its Jewish heritage is still evident in the city. The Jewish Quarter in the city center is a must-see.
- In recent centuries, Girona, thanks to its strategic location on the rivers, has been the subject of countless sieges and the city has been under the rule of numerous kingdoms. However, since 1813, the city has been able to develop in peace and quiet.
