Guide Almuñécar and La Herradura on Costa Tropical

Almuñécar is a resort town on Costa Tropical in Andalusia region. The city, which belongs to the province Granada, has around 27,000 permanent residents. However, in the summer the population increases at least fivefold and Almuñécar is a popular destination both among Spaniards themselves and among tourists from the rest of Europe.

The nearby village La Herradura is set in a very beautiful landscape and has an even more relaxed atmosphere, even during the summer months. La Herradura also attracts a slightly younger crowd, as the area is very popular with windsurfers and divers (in particular, divers consider the bay of Almuñécar and the Marina del Este to be excellent places for diving. Visibility is down to 50 meters). It is also home to the beautiful Marina del Este, as well as the Cerro Gordo Natural Park. Punta de la Mona is one of the more exclusive residential areas on Costa Tropical.

Almuñécar is a relatively cheap town, where most things are centered around the beach. The old town is a charming labyrinth located below the 16th century castle. However, many people do not like the older, rather ugly, high-rise housing complexes that surround the otherwise picturesque town center. Then the neighboring village La Herradura is more appreciated among Scandinavians as it is a more untouched, scenic bay that does not have blemishes in the form of architectural monsters.

Nightlife Almuñécar

Almuñécar is a relatively quiet town with a relaxed nightlife during the winter months. However, during the summer months, when the population increases significantly, it becomes more lively. The pace starts to increase in connection with the San Juan festival, which takes place in June and then escalates during the summer months.

Almuñécar's size means that most of the entertainment is concentrated in the town centre and you will find most of the restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the town centre by the beaches. The Plaza Kelibia square is the go-to destination for evening and night-time entertainment in Almuñécar.

The range of restaurants in this resort is relatively large and many restaurants focus on the local cuisine which is based on large quantities of fresh fish of various kinds and tropical fruits. The latter is something Almuñécar is widely known for. Guava, papaya, figs and a variety of other fruits are grown in Almuñécar , and the locals are no strangers to using fruit in food and desserts.

Attractions Almuñécar

  • With a history that goes back nearly 3,000 years, there are of course a lot of archaeological attractions in the city. A highlight of a sightseeing tour is the Phoenician ruins at Majuelo Park.
  • The Archaeological Museum is located in a 2,000-year-old stone cellar called Cueva de Siete Palacios. Here you can see remains from the Phoenicians, Romans, Muslims and a 3,500-year-old Egyptian amphora (two-handled vessel).
  • Another attraction is the very well-preserved Roman aqueduct at Torrecuevas.
  • The Castle of San Miguel is also worth a visit.

History of Almuñécar

It was the Phoenicians who founded Almuñécar almost 800 years BC. The reason for the foundation was that the location of the place was seen as perfect for fishing and trade.

Like most other towns on the coast, the town was then taken over by the Romans and Sexi, as the place was called, was actually under Roman rule for over 700 years. After the fall of Rome, the Visigoths made a brief interlude, but it was then the Moors who took over. The year the Moors entered Almuñécar was 755 AD. Since 1489, Almuñécar has been part of the central power.

Public Transport Connections and Flights

The nearest airport is Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport, which is 94 km from Almuñécarcity centre. It is easy to find flights to Málaga from Sweden and for the transfer to Almuñécar bus or taxi is recommended. Tips for cheap flights to, among other places, Malaga airport.

Public Transport Connections by car between Almuñécar and other towns on the coast have been very good since 2012 as the A-7 motorway runs through the town. The N340 runs between the northern parts of both Almuñécar and La Herradura. Between Nerja and Almuñécar it only takes 20 minutes via the E-15 and N-340. The town cannot boast of any public transport connections by train, but we recommend renting a car. Tips on where to best rent a car, as well as some Spanish traffic rules you should know.

Weather in Almuñécar

Almuñécar , together with the surrounding towns, has a microclimate with more rainfall and slightly milder summer temperatures. The reason is that the mountain range Sierra Nevada runs almost all the way down to the sea. When the sun is baking other places on the Costa de Sol and temperatures reach 40 degrees, it can be a pleasant 27-30 degrees in Almuñécar.

Apartments and houses for sale in Almuñécar and La Herradura

Then the neighbor Nerja is only growing in popularity, and consequently is the city in Spain where prices are increasing the fastest at the moment, we will have to find alternatives once the city becomes too expensive. Almuñécar and La Herradura are then natural alternatives even though they are currently nowhere near as sought after as Nerja.

Most popular among Scandinavians are the old quarters by the castle.

La Herradura in particular is interesting to us because of its beautiful location. Our company lawyer is currently scanning the area for good, vacant plots . At the same time, we can offer cheap houses and apartments for sale in and around Almuñécar and La Herradura in the form of bank withdrawals. In contrast to Nerja where there is only one bank repossession a year, there are a few more to choose from in this part of Andalusia.
